A Journey of Passion and Excellence

The story of Below&Above begins with a family's love with Pemberton's majestic landscape. John and Evdokia Klepec first discovered this pristine corner of Western Australia as a holiday destination for their young family. Beneath the towering Karri forests and amid the region's untouched beauty, they found themselves drawn to the exceptional terroir, their love of both pinot noir & truffles.

How we started

In 2012, when the opportunity arose to acquire an established vineyard in Pemberton's prestigious Eastbrook sub-region, John and Evdokia embraced the chance to become stewards of this exceptional land. The property, now known as Thella Estate, had already earned recognition as one of Western Australia's premier wine-growing sites since its initial planting in the mid-1990s.

Under the guidance of renowned winemaker Bruce Dukes, 2013 at the first vintage marked the birth of the Below&Above label in 2017—a name that would soon become synonymous with excellence in both wine and truffle production.

Expanding the Dream

The Klepecs' vision expanded in 2014 with the acquisition of a second property in Smithbrook. This land, traditionally known as Walkalwararup by its Indigenous custodians, holds deep cultural significance as "the place where the Dreamtime water serpent came from the earth." This name reflects the property's abundant, naturally low-salinity water sources—a crucial element for truffle  cultivation

Today, John and Evdokia's commitment to excellence drives every aspect of Below&Above's operations:

  • A state-of-the-art 50-hectare truffière with 17,000 specially inoculated trees -divided into 14 fully irrigated blocks with individual sprinklers to ensure optimal conditions for growth. In 2014, we planted our first 8 blocks with 9,000 trees, including English Oak, French Oak, Hazelnut, and Poplar trees, all inoculated with Tuber melanosporum (black winter truffles).
  • In 2015, we expanded the truffiere, adding 6 more blocks with 8,000 trees. These included the same species inoculated with Tuber melanosporum as well as Tuber magnatum (white truffles) specifically for the Poplar trees.
  • 34 hectares of meticulously tended vines producing exceptional Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Merlot
  • Implementation of regenerative farming practices to enhance soil health and biodiversity
  • ISO 22000 certification, ensuring the highest standards of food safety and quality

Looking Forward

Under John and Evdokia's stewardship, Below&Above continues to evolve while staying true to its founding principles. Their vision extends beyond mere production—it encompasses:

  • Becoming one of the Southern Hemisphere's largest single-site truffle producers
  • Expanding global distribution while maintaining exceptional quality
  • Advancing  regenerative and holistic farming practices

Their journey continues to inspire as Below&Above grows, always maintaining the perfect balance between tradition and innovation, luxury and sustainability, and most importantly, their deep connection to the land that first captured their hearts.
