Our Story
Two Farms. One Family. Grown in the Southern Forests.
At Below&Above, we grow premium black winter truffles and cool-climate wines across two neighbouring properties in Western Australia’s Southern Forests region — one in Eastbrook (Pemberton), the other in Smithbrook, just outside Manjimup.
Together, they form a rare dual-estate:
- vineyard in Eastbrook, producing small-batch Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Merlot
- truffière in Smithbrook (near Manjimup) , home to one of Australia’s largest and most advanced black truffle orchards
Everything we produce is grown by us — nurtured by the region’s clean air, rich loamy soil, and a deep connection to place.
How We Started
In 2012, an opportunity arose to acquire an established vineyard in the prestigious Eastbrook sub-region of Pemberton — a site already recognised as one of Western Australia’s premier cool-climate wine estates, first planted in the mid-1990s. John and Evdokia Klepec saw not just a property, but a future — and embraced the chance to become stewards of this exceptional land.
Now known as Thella Estate, the vineyard became the foundation of the Below&Above wine label, with our first vintage produced in 2013 under the guidance of acclaimed winemaker Bruce Dukes. In 2017, the Below&Above name was born — a reflection of our passion for both fine wine and truffles, and our belief that what grows beneath the ground is just as important as what grows above it.
Expanding the Dream
In 2014, John and Evdokia expanded their vision with the acquisition of a second property in Smithbrook, just a short distance from the vineyard. Traditionally known as Walkalwararup by its Indigenous custodians, the land holds deep cultural significance — meaning "the place where the Dreamtime water serpent came from the earth."
The property’s naturally abundant, low-salinity water — flowing from an underground spring — made it ideally suited for establishing a world-class truffle orchard. Today, this site is home to one of Australia’s largest truffières, where we cultivate black winter truffles (Tuber melanosporum) using sustainable and regenerative methods, just outside Manjimup in Western Australia’s Southern Forests.

A Continued Commitment to Excellence
Today, John and Evdokia’s commitment to excellence continues to guide every part of Below&Above — from the soil we farm to the standards we uphold.
Our Smithbrook truffière now spans 50 hectares, with over 17,000 trees planted across 14 fully irrigated blocks — each one carefully managed to create ideal conditions for growing black winter truffles (Tuber melanosporum).
- In 2014, we planted the first eight blocks with 9,000 trees including English Oak, French Oak, Hazelnut
- In 2015, six more blocks were added, including trials with Tuber magnatum (white truffle) under selected Poplar trees — an innovative step in Australian truffle cultivation.
Our Eastbrook vineyard covers 34 hectares of cool-climate vines, where we grow Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Merlot using regenerative and holistic farming methods. Each vintage is selectively bottled — with only the top 10% of grapes chosen for the Below&Above label. If the fruit doesn’t meet our standards, we hold it back or skip the vintage entirely.
As Australia’s only ISO 22000-certified truffle producer, we also lead the way in food safety and traceability — offering confidence to both local and international customers.
From soil health to cellar ageing, our approach is always patient, thoughtful, and precise. Because true quality starts long before the first glass is poured or truffle is shaved.

Looking Forward
Under the guidance of John and Evdokia, Below&Above continues to grow — always with care, always with purpose.
We’re proud to be:
- one of the largest single-site black truffle producers in the Southern Hemisphere
- cool-climate winemaking, with a focus on purity, age-worthiness, and terroir
- regenerative and holistic agriculture in Western Australia’s premium food and wine industry
Our wines are held back until they’re ready. Our truffles are harvested at peak ripeness. And everything we share is grown with the long view in mind.
Because we believe wine and truffles bring people together, and we’re honoured to be part of that story — from our farms to your table.
Grown by us. Shared with care.
